At an earlier time in his life, he was known as Adam. His parents were the emperor, Zachariah, and his mother, Gwendolyn.
On the night of The Red Raids, Adam was still a young boy. He ran with his mother through smoke and screaming until they reached the river of Mere. Faced with an unthinkable choice, Gwendolyn placed him under a sleep spell. His last sight was her face, tear-streaked and trembling, and then blackness.
When he woke, the world was gone. So was she.
The boat drifted for days, maybe weeks. Hunger carved him hollow. His lips split and bled. His mind frayed. He clutched a single book, its pages warped from river spray, because it was the only thing left that felt real.
He washed ashore in a place that did not know his name and did not care. There were no warm fires. No kind faces. Only the sharp truth: live or die.
Every day, his body weakened, but his instincts sharpened. He learned to fight for scraps. To snarl at the sight of another starving thing. To sink teeth into flesh if it meant another breath.
The days blurred. The suns fell and rose without meaning. The boy called Adam faded. Gwendolyn was a memory with no shape.
Kill.
Eat.
Breathe.
What was his name?
Book. Tarvo.
“Tarvo.”
